Preventing Heart Disease through Diet | Heart Disease


So how can we prevent heart disease with diet? Well, I think that’s a great question. You know, we’ve heard a lot about this in
the media over the last several years. There have been a lot of fad diets with no
fat or high fat or no cholesterol or high cholesterol diets. I think the basics here really apply. Those would be to make healthy choices when
you eat. To reduce the intake of high fat and cholesterol
foods, high processed foods or unnatural foods. I call this the grandma test. If your grandma wouldn’t recognize what you’re
eating as food, you probably shouldn’t be eating it. If we talk more specifically about what choices
you can make, I think the Mediterranean diet offers us a great place to start. And there have been several major trials about
this. If we look at the PrediMed study out of Spain
or we look at the Lyon heart study out of France, we see that the Mediterranean diet
really does provide us with a great place to start in where to make our healthy choices. The diet really consists of fresh fruits and
vegetables, white meat and fish, a little bit of alcohol with your meal, and taking
time to eat. I also like to use a simple rule I call the
three Fs. That would be no fried food, no fatty food,
no fast food. I think this is an area where a lot of us
go wrong. If we add to that drinking our calories, such
as sodas and ice teas and fruit juices, I think we can really go a long way to improving
heart disease through diet.
